Roslindale

Known to most as Rozzie, the popularity of Roslindale is soaring. With its blend of newcomers and long-timers, a rich variety of housing stock and an extremely user-friendly “downtown”, Rozzie is drawing folks from across Massachusetts and across the country. This community is composed of several districts, including Metropolitan Hill, Peters Hill, Prospect Hill, Doctor’s Row, the Ladder Streets of Walter to Centre, the Composer Neighborhood, and the Village. Each pocket has its own vibe, and all of them offer a mixture of single families, multi-families and condominiums. There are several larger condominium buildings such as Roslindale Village Residences, Belgrade Crossing, and 18 Robert Street. Each of them has the advantages of professional management plus an intimate feel with fewer than 20 units each. New buildings are on the horizon, including a 17-unit condominium at the corner of Weld and Centre Streets. Most Rozzie neighborhoods have easy access to the world-famous Arnold Arboretum, a 281-acre jewel in Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace with walking/jogging paths and one of the finest horticultural collections on the planet. The area is very dog-friendly and cyclist-friendly. You’ll find doggie water bowls, plenty of bike racks and The Boston Cheese Cellar even provides a pump for your bike tires!

Schools

Roslindale is part of the Boston Public School system, with several elementary schools and the Washington Irving Middle School. There’s also a range of private and charter schools. For more information, visit www.greatschools.org or www.education.com.

Parks and Recreation

In addition to the Arnold Arboretum which hosts many events throughout the year besides its splendid “Lilac Sunday” every Mother’s Day, Rozzie has two fully-utilized sports fields, Healey and Fallon, and the new state-of-the-art playground at Fallon is fun for all ages.

Commute

Access to downtown Boston is via the commuter rail to Back Bay and South Station and a multitude of buses that travel between Forest Hills and Hyde Park, Mattapan, Dedham, Walpole and beyond. If you’re driving, Cummins Highway will connect you to points south and the Jamaicaway will bring you to the Longwood Medical Area, downtown Boston and points north.

Dining and Shopping

Roslindale is a magnet for fans of good food. Shopping options include Roslindale Fish Market with incredibly fresh offerings of Greek cheeses, oils, olives, as well as produce and fish, fileted on the spot. There’s a Halal butcher and Tony’s Market – a butcher shop and Italian Salumeria that will transport you to Sicily; Bob’s Pita Bakery with abundant choices of bread, bakery items, produce, oils, herbs and spices; the Boston Cheese Cellar, and more. The village is also the home of one of the most popular farmers’ markets in the state, open almost year-round with its winter quarters at the Sons of Italy Hall. Restaurants include Sophia’s Grotto, Birch Street Bistro, Delfino, 753 South, Pleasant Café(a classic diner), Fornax Bread Bakery, Effie’s Greek Restaurant and a nice sprinkling of Dominican eateries and pizzerias. If you’re shopping for clothing or items to beautify your castle, visit Birch Street House and Garden and Joanne Rossman (Purveyor of the Unnecessary and the Irresistible), both in the heart of the Village. For a less intimate shopping experience, Rozzie even has its own mini-Target department store! Rozzie is also the home of Sullivan’s pharmacy, one of the largest compounding pharmacies and health-aid suppliers in the state.

Entertainment

Roslindale offers a constantly evolving and revolving calendar of events! Enjoy live music at Adams Park in the summer and at the Birch Street Bistro all year round. The beautifully restored substation across from Adams Park hosts a series of pop-ups and community movie nights. Annual highlights include Rozzie PorchFest at the end of the summer and Roslindale Open Studios in the late fall. Rozzie Open Mic happens twice a month at the Boston School for Modern Languages; many other weekly or monthly events for people of all ages sponsored by the local branch of the Boston Public Library assure that there’s always something fun for every Rozzie-dent, and every visitor as well!
